In 2005, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a Survey and Certification Letter (S&C-05-42) that provides clarification and information regarding the grievance and complaint process. The letter is divided into four Conditions of Participation (CoPs).

Out of the four CoPs, the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) §482.13 is specific about the grievance and complaint process and is required in the CPXP exam.

The letter and the CFR §482.13 include important topics that you can expect to be covered in the CPXP exam, such as the definition of grievance and other aspects involving communication, response time, response format, and content.
